About the Event
The relationship between Indonesia and the Netherlands is complex and multifaceted, characterized by centuries of trade, colonization, and cultural exchange. Numerous studies have explored the evolution between the two countries. However, no research has approached this topic from the viewpoint of an art school to clarify the significance of their connection. Verleden - Heden is hosting an exhibition, symposium, art talk, and workshop. The exhibition, titled “Past—Present: Art Schools in Indonesia,” presents artworks and archives that represent the art schools affiliated with the Faculty of Art and Design at the Institute Technology of Bandung (FSRD-ITB) and the Indonesia Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta (ISI Yogya). This event will delve into the history and development of art schools in Indonesia, tracing their evolution from traditional academies to contemporary educational institutions. Verleden - Heden is proudly supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia to the Netherlands, Institut Teknologi Bandung, and Institut Seni Indonesia - Yogyakarta. Verleden - Heden is also supported by Museum IJsselstein, Levende Kunst, Institut Sejarah Seni Indonesia, Sekolah Indonesia Den Haag, Gajah Gallery, De Lachende Javaan, ArtSociates, and Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia - Belanda.
Our Mission
Verleden – Heden aims to bridge past and present by fostering meaningful conversations between Indonesian and European art communities. Through exhibitions, talks, and workshops, we promote critical reflection, collaboration, and inclusive art education practices.
